Visualization for a chapter in Oppidum, utilizing the shape language from previous explorations to construct new sentences (concepts). I feel once the grammar is in place you can remix it’s useful properties and further resolve those not yet aligned. In prototyping rapidly and recycling previous success, motivation and efficiency is easily maintained.

Concepts and exploration for Halo 4, some of which is featured in Awakening: The Art of Halo 4. Much more to come soon!

I thought you all deserved to see the less glamorous side of Concept Art and though perhaps a bit mundane - this was an assignment I very much enjoyed for the simplicity and directness of it’s parameters and freedom to simply design.

Though the process is pretty standard, the technique used may not be. I’ve never been much of a draftsman and very much prefer shape and expression to line and precision - and hence, struggled a bit at first with this task. Later I developed a helpful technique utilizing Layer Effects > Stroke in order to translate shape into clean line.

The first frame is a simple 3D cube built to the Designer’s specifications. It’s followed by a sketch, a refined sketch and after feedback and revision, the final concept. I had built a modular system of light, shade and local color that allowed for very quick exploration of the UNSC color palette, which at the time was still being determined.

This was an experiment in utilizing photo textures via the clone stamp and healing brush. I’ll rarely use textures in my work, but when I do I prefer this method to more direct overlays and the like. In any case it keeps the mind happy to explore and this method allowed me to complete the assignment on a very short schedule.

The gray blockout you see was done by either Chris Hans or Nick Bell I believe. Again, not something I strictly adhered to - but used as a spatial catalyst.

Here you can see a bit of the process I developed for this assignment. Highly modular and quite a bit like kitbashing - necessary due to the short timeframe involved. I was doing a couple of these each day at their peak.

You’ll see a frame where Master Chief gets a visual upgrade, courtesy of a lesson given to me directly on the painting by Gabriel Garza - one of the very best concept artists I know.

Much more to come soon!

The motion concepts done for this project eventually inspired me to do some much more elaborate ones of my own, viewable here and here.

Soon as I get a spare moment, I’ll put this PSD up !

Was happy to be contacted to help the folks behind The King’s Lance pitch their dream project, now on Kickstarter. Sometimes concept art takes years to give energy back, so it’s also been nice to have work to share so soon after completion and to be able to help with promotion.

The game seems fun, and I’m all for more depth in iOS entertainment. Have a look, http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2046532057/the-kings-lance
